Driving a computer from the keyboard: moving around, reading and moving files, and joining commands with pipes.

Key ideas

  • Every command is command -option argument; with pwd, ls and cd you always know where you are.
  • | feeds one command's output to the next: small tools combine into big jobs.
  • > writes to a file (replacing it), >> appends; * picks many files at once.

grep ERROR logs/*.log | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn > report.txt
